In James Taylor's thirty-plus year career, he has released 18 best-selling albums of his own (depending on what you count) and has appeared on over eighty albums by other artists. From performing as a session guitarist to singing background, second, or duet vocals, he has improved countless albums simply by gracing them with his presence. He also occasionally served as writer, producer, or arranger of vocal and horn sections.

Compiled here is the complete list of JT's appearances on other artists' albums. The songs he contributed to are listed along with his role in each. A brief review of each song or album is also included to help make narrowing down your want lists a little easier. Please keep in mind the opinions expressed on this page are that of the author and are just that. Opinions. 1970

Carole King, Writer (Epic/Ode #EK 34944) - "Goin' Back" (guitar, background vocals). JT plays acoustic guitar throughout this album, and adds his trademark "la la la's" to this song. This is a very enjoyable record, made just before Carole hit the jackpot with Tapestry. This album also features Danny Kortchmar.

John Stewart, Willard (Capitol #ST-540) - "Big Joe" (guitar, background vocals), "Clack Clack" (guitar), "All American Girl" (guitar), "Oldest Living Son" (guitar). JT's vocals are pretty much inaudible, although his guitar work is quite nice on this extremely rare record, one of his earliest collaborations. Produced by Peter Asher, this album also features Carole King, Russ Kunkel, and Danny Kortchmar.

James Taylor, "Suite For 20-G" (alternate mono mix) (Warner Brothers/Seven Arts #7387, out of print) - The differences are subtle but nonetheless interesting on this, the flip side to a mono reduction of "Sweet Baby James". This version features extra horn parts in the first minute, and some added guitar fills later, just before the whole band kicks in. Cool.

1971

Carole King, Tapestry (Epic/Ode #EK 34946) - "So Far Away" (guitar), "Home Again" (guitar), "Way Over Yonder" (guitar), "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" (guitar, background vocals). Even without JT, we all know this album is a timeless classic. It also features Russ Kunkel and Danny Kortchmar.

Carole King, Music (Epic/Ode #EK 34949) - "Song of Long Ago" (second vocal, guitar), "Some Kind of Wonderful" (guitar), "Too Much Rain" (guitar). JT adds his delightful "la la la's" to "Song of Long Ago," as well as adding some nice guitar touches. This album also features Russ Kunkel and Danny Kortchmar.

Joni Mitchell, Blue (Reprise #2038-2) - "California" (guitar), "All I Want" (guitar), "A Case Of You" (guitar). Another timeless classic everyone should own.

Alex Taylor, With Friends and Neighbors (Capricorn # SD 860, out of print) - "Night Owl" (guitar). JT's guitar is blended in somewhere deep into the background on his brother's cover version of JT's own song. Alex also covers JT's "Highway Song" on this album.

James Taylor, "Country Road" (alternate version) (Warner Brothers UK #WB 7460, out of print) - An entirely different recording than from Sweet Baby James, this version features a slightly funkier feel, plus James' angelic multi-tracked chorus (a "heavenly band full of angels"?) harmonizing through the last half. This alternate version was also released in Japan with a "Sweet Baby James" photo picture sleeve (WB P-1020W).

Kate Taylor, Sister Kate (Cotillion #SD 9045, out of print) - "Look At Granny Run, Run" (guitar), "Do I Still Figure In Your Life" (guitar). Kate also covers James' songs "Lo and Behold" and "You Can Close Your Eyes" on this record. JT's work is minimal, but this is still a truly wonderful album. This album also features Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, J.D. Souther, Peter Asher, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and Danny Kortchmar.

1972

Carly Simon, No Secrets (Elektra #ELE 75049) - "Waited So Long" (background vocals). JT is barely audible.

James Taylor, One Man Dog (Quadrophonic Album) (QuadraDisc, out of print). As was the case with a number of Quad records in the 70's, the original masters were used to create a very different version of this classic album. Six of the eighteen songs feature alternate vocal takes, many feature additional or changed arrangements, and "Little David" even includes a few extra instrumental bars! A great fun listen, and very hard to find. (FYI, there was also a Quad version of "Gorilla" but the performances were the same as the stereo release.)

Neil Young, Harvest (Reprise #2277-2) - "Heart of Gold" (background vocals), "Old Man" (background vocals, banjo). Fantastic vocal harmonies help make this another necessity to any collection. This album also features Linda Ronstadt, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash.

1973

Livingston Taylor, Over the Rainbow (Capricorn #CP-0114, out of print) - "Loving Be My New Horizon" (trio vocals), "Pretty Woman" (background vocals), "Rodeo" (background vocals). James, Livingston, and Carly Simon sing a great harmony trio on "Loving" -- a truly wonderful tune. The song also appears on Liv's 1979 compilation album Echoes (Capricorn #CPN-0220, out of print).

1974

Martha Reeves, Martha Reeves (MCA #414, available on CD only in the UK) - "Power of Love" (horn conductor & arranger). Don't know why JT was in the studio with Martha Reeves (of Motown's Martha Reeves & The Vandellas fame), but that actually was him conducting and arranging the horns. And that actually was me who bought the album just to hear it. Not bad actually.

Tom Rush, Ladies Love Outlaws (Columbia #KC 33054) - "Jenny Lynn" (harmony vocal). The one and only time JT sings with his hero Tom Rush. The song is fun and upbeat, and JT's smooth harmonies are clearly heard in the chorus. This fine album also features Timothy B. Schmidt and Carly Simon.

Carly Simon, Hotcakes (Elektra #ELE 1002) - "Mind On My Man" (guitar), "Older Sister" (guitar), "Just Not True" (guitar & background vocals), "Hotcakes" (arranged & conducted horn section), "Misfit" (guitar), "Forever My Love" (guitar), "Mockingbird" (duet vocals), "Haven't Got Time For the Pain" (guitar). JT adds some fine touches to this, one of Carly's best albums.

Various Artists, The Bitter End Years (Roxbury #RLX 300, out of print) - "Riding on a Railroad" (live). JT sings a very sweet solo acoustic version of this song, just after writing it. Recorded live in Oakland, CA in 1972, released in 1974. This extremely hard-to-find three album set also features live performances by The Simon Sisters (Carly and Lucy), Van Morrison, John Prine, and many others.

1975

Crosby and Nash, Wind On the Water (MCA #31251) - "Wind on the Water" (background vocals), "Carry Me" (guitar). Crosby, Nash, & Taylor sound just perfect harmonizing together, which may explain why they've recorded together so many times. This album has some great highlights, but not all of it is as enjoyable as the two songs above.

Carole King, Thoroughbred (Epic/Ode #EK 34963) - "There's a Space Between Us" (second vocal), "High Out of Time" (background vocals), "I'd Like to Know You Better" (background vocals), "Still Here Thinking of You" (guitar). JT sings a wonderful vocal on the album's highlight, "There's a Space Between Us," plus more harmony with David Crosby & Graham Nash. This album also features Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, and J. D. Souther.

Joni Mitchell, Hissing Of Summer Lawns (Asylum #1051-2) - "In France They Kiss On Main Street" (background vocals), "Hissing Of Summer Lawns" (guitar). In one of his oddest vocal contributions, JT adds a very misplaced sounding "woh-oh-oh" in the middle of "In France". Not one of Joni's best, but a very good album. This album also features David Crosby and Graham Nash.

Linda Ronstadt, Prisoner In Disguise (Asylum #1045-2) - "You Tell Me That I'm Falling Down" (guitar). JT makes a brief appearance as a session player only on this classic album. His work on this track is top notch. This album also features Russ Kunkel, J.D. Souther, and Peter Asher.

Carly Simon, Playing Possum (Elektra #ELE 1033) - "Look Me In the Eyes" (guitar), "Slave" (guitar), "Waterfall" (guitar, background vocals), "Playing Possum" (background vocals). JT has a couple of nice "ahh" and "la la la" interludes in "Waterfall", the best song on the album, plus a great harmony vocal on the title track. This album also features Carole King, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, and Russ Kunkel.

1976

Carly Simon, Another Passenger (Elektra #ELE 1064) - "Fairweather Father" (guitar, background vocals), "Be With Me" (guitar). "Fairweather Father" features a beautiful harmony arrangement with JT, Carly, and Jackson Browne. This album also features Linda Ronstadt, The Doobie Brothers, and Little Feat.

James Taylor, "I Can Dream Of You" (Warner Bros. #WBS 8222, out of print) - JT's cover version of brother Livingston's song was released only as the flip-side of JT's "Shower the People" single. Too bad -- it's dreamy.

1977

Garland Jeffreys, Ghost Writer (A&M #SP-4629, out of print) - "Cool Down Boy" (background vocals). Although the record is quite decent, JT is barely audible in the background of this tune. This album also features David Spinozza, Don Grolnick, David Lasley, and Arnold McCuller.

Rosie, Last Dance (RCA #APL1-2415, CD available at davidlasley.com) - "Out of Pawn" (background vocals). Rosie was a short-lived disco trio made up of David Lasley, Lynn Pitney, and Lana Marrano. JT doesn't come in until the last thirty seconds of this ballad, when he sings a fun little ad-libbed vocal as the song fades. This extremely rare album also features David Spinozza, David Sanborn, and Dr. John.

The Section, Fork It Over (Capitol #ST-11656, available on CD only in Japan) - "Bad Shoes" (lead vocal). JT sings a nice but short vocal for this jazz/rock combo featuring Danny Kortchmar, Russel Kunkel, Leland Sklar, and Craig Doerge. Fairly impossible to find. This album also features David Sanborn and David Crosby.

Lucy Simon, Stolen Time (RCA #APL1-1745, out of print). "Father To Son" (background vocals). Carly's sister's 1977 album, her second solo effort, is a disappointment mostly due to poor production. "Father to Son" is a standout track, with JT harmonizing softly in the chorus.

Libby Titus, Libby Titus (Columbia #PC 34152, out of print) - "Darkness 'Til Dawn" (background vocals). JT and Carly Simon sing some lovely harmonies on this, one of the finest songs on the debut album by a teriffic singer who was somehow misplaced in the 70's. This album also features Don Grolnick, Patti Austin, and Paul Simon.

1978

Art Garfunkel, Watermark (Columbia #CK 34975) - "(What a) Wonderful World" (trio vocals with Simon and Garfunkel). A lovely version of the Sam Cooke classic, and a very nice album. This album also features David Crosby, Stephen Bishop, and The Chieftans.

John Hall, John Hall (Asylum # 6E-117, out of print) - "The Fault" (background vocals), "Voyagers" (background vocals). JT sings with Carly Simon on both of these tracks, neither of which are necessities. This album also features Bonnie Raitt, David Sanborn, Arnold McCuller, and David Lasley.

George Jones, Bartender's Blues (Epic #PE 35414, out of print) - "Bartender's Blues" (second vocal). Recorded and released first as a single in 1977, George Jones does this song proud, as would be expected. JT's vocal accompaniment is perfect. Also appears on Jones' 1979 LP My Very Special Guests (Epic #JE 35544) and his retrospective CD Anniversary (Epic #EGK 38323), released in 1982.

Don McLean, Chain Lightning (Millenium #BXL1-7756) - "Since I Don't Have You" (background vocals). JT is nearly inaudible in the mix of this mediocre cover version on a very mediocre album. The song is also included on McLean's Classics CD (Curb #D2-77547).

Carly Simon, Boys In the Trees (Elektra #ELE128) - "You Belong To Me" (background vocals), "Boys In the Trees" (guitar, background vocals), "Back Down to Earth" (guitar), "Devoted To You" (guitar, duet vocals), "De Bat (Fly In Me Face)" (guitar, background vocals, vocal arrangements), "Tranquillo (Melt My Heart)" (co-writer, background vocals), "One Man Woman" (writer). JT is all over this album, one of Carly's best. "Devoted to You" is a truly excellent duet. This album also features Don Grolnick, John Hall, and Luther Vandross.

Kate Taylor, Kate Taylor (Sony #SRCS 6459, available on CD only in Japan) - "A Fool In Love" (background vocals, horn arrangement), "Smuggler's Song" (guitar, background vocals), "Harriet Tubman" (guitar), "Stubborn Kind of Woman" (background vocals, vocal arrangement), "Happy Birthday, Sweet Darling" (writer, guitar, background vocals, vocal arrangement), "It's In His Kiss" (guitar, duet vocals), "Slow and Steady" (co-writer, guitar), "It's Growing" (guitar, background vocals), "Tiah's Cove" (guitar, background vocals), "Rodeo" (guitar), "Jason and Ida" (guitar, background vocals). Highlighted by a very fun version of "It's In His Kiss," this excellent album was produced by JT and Lew Hahn. This album also features Don Grolnick, John Hall, Alex Taylor, Hugh Taylor, and Carly Simon.

Various Artists, Studs Terkel's Working (Original Broadway Cast Album) (Columbia #35411) - "Brother Trucker" (writer), "Millworker" (writer), "Un Mejor Dia Vendra" (co-writer). This is the cast soundtrack for the failed Studs Terkel musical, which closed on Broadway after only two weeks. Although James does not perform on this album, it is worth a mention for the three songs he was commissioned to write, two of which he later recorded for his own "Flag" album. The third, "Un Mejor Dia Vendra", is a Spanish song for which James wrote the melody only. This album features performances by Patty LuPone, Joe Mantegna, Rex Everhart and others. (It's also worth noting that James did perform as the Truck Driver in the PBS television production of "Working" in 1980.)

1979

Karla Bonoff, Restless Nights (Columbia #CK 35799) - "The Water is Wide" (background vocals). A beautiful version which preceded JT's New Moon Shine version by over a decade, featuring harmony by JT and J. D. Souther. Also a wonderful album. This album also features Don Henley, Don Grolnick, Russel Kunkel, and Danny Kortchmar. This song also appears on the otherwise useless Thirtysomething soundtrack (Geffen 24413) and the Bonoff greatest hits CD The Best Of Karla Bonoff: All My Life (Sony/Columbia).

Jimmy Buffett, Volcano (MCA #MCAD-1657) - "Treat Her Like a Lady" (background vocals), "Survive" (background vocals), "Lady I Can't Explain" (background vocals), "Sending the Old Man Home" (guitar, background vocals). Hugh and Alex Taylor sing with JT on "Lady" and "Survive" under the guise of The Embarrassing Stains. No outstanding tracks for JT, and not a great album. This album also features Russel Kunkel and Dave Loggins.

John Hall, Power (Columbia #35790, available on CD only in Japan) - "Power" (trio vocals). JT sings some nice harmony with Hall & Carly Simon on this great anti-nuclear song, which was also performed live on the 1979 No Nukes album. Go for the live version instead.

Carly Simon, Spy (Elektra #5E-506) - "Just Like You Do" (background vocals), "Never Been Gone" (background vocals), "Love You By Heart" (background vocals), "Spy" (co-writer, background vocals). "Love You By Heart" is very pretty, and "Never Been Gone" features a nice choral introduction by JT, Carly, and Lucy Simon, but most of the album is not enjoyable. This album also features John Hall, David Sanborn, and Don Grolnick.

Various Artists, No Nukes (Asylum #60592 2, now avaiable as a 2-CD set) - "Honey Don't Leave L.A.," "Captain Jim's Drunken Dream" (performed solo), "Power" (harmony vocals with Carly Simon, John Hall, and The Doobie Bros.), "The Times They Are a' Changin'" (vocals with Carly Simon and Graham Nash), "Mockingbird" (duet with Carly Simon), "Takin' It To The Streets" (vocals with the Doobie Bros.). This 3-album (or 2-CD) set is a necessity for any JT collector. It also features Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, and many others.

1980

David Sanborn, Hideaway (Warner Bros. #3379-2) - "Carly's Song" (background vocals). JT sings harmony "ahhhs" in the background with Arnold McCuller and David Lasley . This album also features Don Grolnick, Danny Kortchmar, David Spinozza, and Waddy Wachtel. The song is also available on 1994's The Best of David Sanborn (Warner Bros. # 9 45768-2).

Carly Simon, Come Upstairs (Warner Bros. #BSK 3443) - "Stardust" (background vocals), "Them" (background vocals), "Jesse" (background vocals). Even JT's contributions could not save this album from mediocrity. It also features Alex, Hugh, and daughter Sarah Maria Taylor (background vocals on "Jesse"), as well as "James," a song Carly wrote about JT. ("James / Your voice is like the water... James / The beauty of your voice / Lifts us from sadness")

Various Artists, In Harmony (Warner Bros. #3481-2) - "Jelly Man Kelly" (lead vocal), "In Harmony" (background vocals), "Be With Me" (guitar). JT sings the lead on the wonderfully goofy "Jelly Man Kelly," which he co-wrote with his daughter Sally especially for this Sesame Street collection. This album also features the rest of the Taylor siblings, The Simon Sisters, Don Grolnick, and many others. "Jelly Man Kelly" also appears on the 1992 various artists CD A Child's Celebration of Song (Warner Bros. #9 42519-2, out of print).

1981

Various Artists, In Harmony II (Columbia #PC 37641, out of print) - "Sunny Skies" (lead vocal). A very different, slower version made just for this Sesame Street album. The original depressing lyrics are replaced with happier ones here. ("Sunny Skies misses his friends / And he has some friends!") This album also features Carly and Lucy Simon, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and many others.

1982

Bill LaBounty, Bill LaBounty (Warner Bros. #BSK 3632, out of print) - "Didn't Want to Say Goodbye" (background vocals), "Never Gonna Look Back" (background vocals). JT's harmony shines on "Never Gonna Look Back" on this otherwise harmless Christopher Cross-like album. This album also features David Sanborn, Patti Austin, and Jennifer Warnes.

David Lasley, Missin' Twenty Grand (EMI #ST-17066, CD available at davidlasley.com) - "Got to Find Love" (background vocals). Also included on this record is Lasley's cover version of JT's "Looking For Love On Broadway." This album also features Arnold McCuller, Bonnie Raitt, Luther Vandross, and Pete Townshend.

Joni Mitchell, Wild Things Run Fast (Geffen # GEFD-2019) - "Man To Man" (background vocals). JT's contribution is minimal and Joni's work has been much, much better.

Linda Ronstadt, Get Closer (Asylum #9 60185-2) - "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine" (duet vocals). A great rockin' version of the Ike and Tina Turner classic on one of Ronstadt's best albums. This album also features J. D. Souther, Emmylou Harris, and Dolly Parton.

1985

Joni Mitchell, Dog Eat Dog (Geffen # GEFD-24074, out of print) - "Tax Free" (background vocals), "Dog Eat Dog" (background vocals), "Shiny Toys" (background vocals). JT should have definitely avoided working on Joni's foray into electronic rock. This album also features Thomas Dolby, Don Henley, and Michael McDonald.

Ricky Skaggs, Love's Gonna Get Ya (Epic #EK 40309) - "New Star Shining" (duet vocals). A sappy, poorly produced song on a weak album. JT also appears in the music video. This album also features John Hall and Leland Sklar.

1986

Graham Nash, Innocent Eyes (Atlantic #81633, out of print) - "Sad Eyes" (second vocal). A great song. Not such a great album.

Linda Ronstadt, For Sentimental Reasons (Asylum #9 60474-2) - "Straighten Up and Fly Right" (second vocal). A very unique version of the Nat King Cole standard, with harmony vocals by JT like you've never heard him before. This album also features Don Grolnick, Nelson Riddle & His Orchestra, and a bevy of classic jazz musicians.

Steve Winwood, Back In The High Life (Island #830 148) - "Back In the High Life Again" (second vocal). Everyone knows this one, but how many remember JT in it? To be fair, JT's harmony is terrific; it just doesn't sound much like him. This song was also remastered for the Winwood 4-CD box set, The Finer Things (Island #314 516 860-2).

1988

Jimmy Buffett, Hot Water (MCA #MCAD-42093) - "Prince of Tides" (background vocals), "Pre-You" (background vocals), "Great Heart" (background vocals), "L'Air de la Louisiane" (trio vocals). The beautiful harmony vocals on "L'Air de la Louisiane" with Buffett and Timothy B. Schmit are worth the price of this disc alone. This album also features Russel Kunkel and The Neville Brothers.

Livingston Taylor, Life Is Good (Atco/Critique #7 90941-2, available only from Taylor Music) - "City Lights" (duet vocals). A very nice but poorly produced duet. Although this album is popular with Liv fans, it is not one of his best.

Various Artists, Stay Awake (A&M #CD 3918 DX 003644) - "Second Star to the Right" (lead vocal). Backed by the excellent female vocal trio The Roches, this is a beautifully mellow and sad song. This unique album also features Bonnie Raitt, Harry Nilsson, Suzanne Vega, and many others.

1989

David Crosby, Oh Yes I Can (A&M #CD 5232) - "Oh Yes I Can" (second vocal). JT's vocal is short and sweet on this inspirational song of life and love. Not a bad album either.

Mark O'Connor, On the Mark (Warner Bros. #9 25970-2, out of print) - "Old Blue" (guitar, lead vocal). A terrific song highlighting a fairly interesting album by one of the most gifted violin players around.

Alex Taylor, Voodoo In Me (King Snake Records #KS 015CD, out of print) - "He Will Break Your Heart" (duet vocal), "Vanessa" (background vocal). JT and his late brother Alex trade vocals on their cover version of this soul classic. This was Alex's last album, comprised mostly of straight-ahead blues numbers.

Various Artists, The Best of Studio C, Vol. 1 (out of print) - "Something In the Way She Moves" (guitar, vocal). JT performs a solo acoustic version live in the studio at KBCO-FM in Boulder, Colorado. This track was also included on their 1995 Studio C Retrospective CD. Both discs were printed in very limited quantities and sold out quickly to benefit AIDS research.

1990

Crosby, Stills & Nash, "Chippin' Away" (Atlantic CD single, out of print) - JT sang background vocals on this song, which celebrated the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. It's a fine song, but was released only briefly as a single.

Hugh Taylor, It's Up To You (Village Green # PCCY-00157) - "World of Difference" (background vocal), "It's Up To You" (background vocal), "Brick By Brick" (background vocal), "What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am)" (background vocal), "Ol' 55" (background vocal). Although his voice is smooth and very pleasant, Hugh Taylor's only solo effort lays to rest the rumors that he has the best voice of the siblings. The album is cheezily produced, but does have its moments, highlighted by the title track. All of JT's siblings sing on this disc, which is now available directly from Hugh Taylor for $15 plus shipping. You can order with VISA/MC at (508) 645-3511.

1991

Marc Cohn, Marc Cohn (Atlantic #7 82178-2) - "Perfect Love" (second vocal). A lovely song on a very pleasant (if slightly dull) album.

Various Artists, For Our Children (Walt Disney #60616-2) - "Getting To Know You" (lead vocal). JT sings a lovely version of the Rogers & Hammerstein classic on this benefit album for The Pediatric AIDS Foundation. This album also features Carole King, Jackson Browne, Harry Nilsson (with a fantastic rarity), and sixteen others.

1992

James Taylor, "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha (remix)" (Columbia Promo #CSK 4499, out of print) - A very different remix than the album version, including a new, upbeat drum track and an extended ending.

James Taylor, The View From Inside: A Radio Special (Columbia Promo CD #CDNK 702, out of print) - This rare interview CD was made and released in Canada as a radio station promo only. It includes an hour long interview "special", featuring James' thoughts about his New Moon Shine album and excerpts of songs.

Neil Young, Harvest Moon (Reprise #9 45057-2) - "From Hank to Hendrix" (background vocals), "War of Man" (background vocals), "One of These Days" (background vocals). Excellent work on an excellent album. This album also features Linda Ronstadt and Nicolette Larson.

Various Artists, A League Of Their Own (soundtrack) (Columbia #CK 52919) - "It's Only a Paper Moon" (lead vocal), "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" (lead vocal). A must-have for JT collectors, these are beautiful renditions of timeless standards. This album also features Carole King, Art Garfunkel, Billy Joel, and The Manhattan Transfer.

Various Artists, Bob & Tom: We Three Kings (Private Label #Q-95 XMS 92, out of print) - "Carolina In My Mind". JT performs another beautiful solo acoustic version of this classic, but this time he first shares a minute-long story about how it was written. James is the only musical guest on this collection of comedy sketches from Bob & Tom's radio show on WFBQ in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Various Artists, The Cities' Sampler: Keepsakes (Private Label, out of print) - "Pretty Boy Floyd" (guitar, lead vocal). The only legitimate release of this great old folk standard (which has been in JT's repertoire since the 1960's) is on this limited edition sampler CD from Minneapolis' KTCZ 97.1 FM. James sails beautifully through this classic; it's just him and his trusty acoustic guitar, recorded live at the radio station.

1993

Various Artists, Redbeard's All Access CD (Private Label) - "Carolina In My Mind" (guitar, lead vocal) - This disc was a limited edition radio station CD of performances recorded live on Q102 FM in Dallas, TX.

Various Artists, Sweet Airs That Give Delight: Forty Seasons of Music from the Stratford Festival (Attic #ACD 1378) - "You Spotted Snakes" (lead vocal), "Sigh No More Ladies" (lead vocal), "Come Unto These Yellow Sands" (lead vocal), "Where the Bee Sucks" (lead vocal), "When Daisies Pied" (lead vocal), "Life on the Inside" (guitar, lead vocal). JT performs six songs out of 32 total tracks on this limited edition Canadian CD, mostly with an orchestra and choir. These are all theatrical Shakespearean compositions, reorchestrated and conducted by Stanley Silverman. It's a fun listen, and certainly the most drastically different project JT has participated in. The only song recorded with a standard four piece band, "Life On the Inside", is worth the price of this disc alone. Contact the Stratford Festival Theatre Store at (519) 271-0055 ext. 2221.

1994

Art Garfunkel, Up 'til Now (Columbia #CK 47113) - "Crying In the Rain" (guitar, duet vocal), "It's All In the Game" (guitar). An excellent duet on a very nice collection of old and new Garfunkel songs. The two JT tracks were produced by Don Grolnick. This album also features Paul Simon, Mark O'Connor, and of course Jimmy Webb.

Carole King, "A Natural Woman: The Ode Collection 1968-1976" (box set) (Ode/Epic #48833) - "You've Got a Friend" (live) (guitar, duet vocal). You can tell the exact moment JT walks out on the stage by the uproarious cheers in the audience, which last nearly a minute. The harmony is a little off, but this is a gem anyway, and a great box set. Recorded live at Carnegie Hall 6/18/71. This box set also features the entire Tapestry album plus plenty of other JT appearances.

Manhattan Transfer, Tonin' (Atlantic #82661-2) - "Dream Lover" (lead vocal). A very pleasant song, although possibly a little too sweet. This album also features Frankie Valli, Phil Collins, Smokey Robinson, and many other stars.

Milton Nascimento, Angelus (Warner Bros. #9 45499-2) - "Only a Dream In Rio" (duet vocal). An entirely different version than on JT's That's Why I'm Here album. JT and Nascimento's voices do not blend well on this nearly seven-minute version of JT's song.

John Sheldon & Blue Streak, Boneyard (Signature Sounds #SSRC 1227) - "The Little Things" (duet vocal). A fairly ordinary blues-rock song by an artist mostly known locally around Martha's Vineyard. Not one of JT's best collaborations. JT also served as executive producer for this album.

Various Artists, 2 Meter Sessies, Volume 5 (Radio Records #477702-2, out of print) - "Millworker". "2 Meter Sessies" is a popular Dutch radio show that features live "Unplugged" style performances. JT performed this, one of his favorite songs, on April 5, 1994 with Don Grolnick, Carlos Vega & Jimmy Johnson. The CD, released only in Holland and Belgium, is so hard to find that I dare you to try.

1995

Randy Newman, Faust (Reprise #9 45672-2) - "Glory Train" (lead vocal), "How Great Our Lord" (lead vocal), "Best Little Girl" (spoken vocal), "Northern Boy" (duet vocal), "Relax, Enjoy Yourself" (duet vocal). JT is featured in the role of God (what else?) in Newman's modern musical version of this classic tale. Although it's certainly not very JT-like, the album is enjoyable, highlighted by the opening track, "Glory Train." This album also features Don Henley, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, and Linda Ronstadt.

Maura O'Connell, Stories (Hannibal #HNCD 1389) - "Love Divine" (second vocal). A beautiful song and a wonderful album.

Carly Simon, Clouds In My Coffee (box set) (Arista #07822-18798-2) - "Mockingbird" (duet vocal), "Devoted To You" (guitar, duet vocal), "Angel From Montgomery" (guitar, plus new ad-lib vocals by Ben Taylor), "I'm All It Takes To Make You Happy" (guitar, background vocals). All tracks are digitally remastered on this box set. "Montgomery" and "Happy" are both great unreleased tracks from a 1972 recording session.

Ben Taylor, "I Will" (Giant CD/cassette single) - JT co-produced this very sweet version of the classic Beatles song with Frank Filipetti. It's eerie how much Ben sounds like his father, circa Sweet Baby James. This song is more readily available on the Bye Bye Love soundtrack album (Giant #4/2-24609).

1996

Jimmy Buffett, Banana Wind (MCA/Margaritaville #MCAD-11451) - "False Echoes" (second vocal). A beautiful nine-minute song with great harmony vocals by JT. A lovely acoustic album as a whole too.

Valerie Carter, The Way It Is (Countdown Records #77737-2, out of print) - "I Say Amen" (background vocals). JT sings barely distinguishable harmonies in the background with Arnold McCuller and David Lasley. This album also features Jackson Browne, Lyle Lovett, Linda Ronstadt, and Phoebe Snow.

Elio e le Storie Tese, Eat The Phikis (Aspirine/BMG #74321-36094-2, available only in Italy) - "First Me, Second Me (The Peak of The Mountains)" (lead vocal). JT sings the lead on less than two minutes of this song, but it's absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth tracking this disc down.

Carole King, The Carnegie Hall Concert: June 18, 1971 (Ode/Epic/Legacy #EK 64942) - "You've Got a Friend" (guitar, duet vocal), "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow/Some Kind of Wonderful/Up On the Roof (medley)" (guitar, duet vocal). JT joins Ms. King for the finale of her famous Carnegie Hall concert and is in fine form. Although this recording of "You've Got a Friend" has been previously released on the Carole King box set, the medley has not and it is wonderful, as is the rest of the disc. This album also features Danny Kortchmar.

Livingston Taylor, Bicycle (Whistling Dog Music) - "Boatman" (background vocals). JT shows up pretty clearly in the background of this very likable tune. One of Livingston's best albums in years.

Various Artists, Columbia Records Radio Hour, Vol. 2 (Columbia #CK 67498) - "(I've Got To) Stop Thinkin' 'Bout That" (guitar, lead vocal). JT performs a wonderfully rockin' version of this song will his full band, recorded at Great Woods, MA in August 1994. (This version also appears on the rare James Taylor bootleg CD Got Some Friends.) This collection also features performances by Nanci Griffith, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

1997

Art Garfunkel, Across America: The Very Best of Art Garfunkel (Virgin/Hybrid #7243 8 42655 2 6) - "Crying In the Rain" (guitar, duet vocal). JT performs this beautiful classic ballad with Art live in a quiet outdoor park on Ellis Island. This was originally taped for Art Garfunkel's recent Disney Channel special.

Patricia Kaas, Dans Ma Chair (Columbia # COL 483834 2, available on CD only in France) - "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" (guitar, duet vocal). JT sings a great duet with popular French vocalist Patricia Kaas on this newly-recorded, modernized version.

Mark O'Connor, Liberty (Sony Classical # SK 63216) - "Johnny Has Gone For a Soldier" (guitar, lead vocal). O'Connor and JT arranged this 17th Century Gaelic song for this beautiful soundtrack to the new PBS series Liberty! An American Revolution. This track alone is worth the price of the disc. The CD includes as a bonus a CD-Rom portion with rehearsal footage of the two, and the music video for the song.

James Taylor, Hourglass Interview Disc (Columbia Promo CD #CDNK 1294, out of print) - This rare interview CD was made and released only in Canada as a radio station promo. It includes an hour long interview "special", featuring James' thoughts about the album and excerpts of songs. The only musical rarities it includes are the single remix of "Little More Time With You" and JT's band rehearsing behind some of the interview segments.

James Taylor, "Line 'Em Up (Single Remix)" (Columbia Promo CD #CSK 3334, out of print) - This remix, available only to radio stations, has a much clearer sound than the album version. The lead vocal is more up front, the keyboard part at the beginning has been taken out to let James' voice shine a little more, and the background vocals are slightly different. All in all, I prefer this version over the released version!

James Taylor, "Little More Time With You (Remix)" (Columbia Promo CD #CSK 0426, out of print) - A different mix than the album version, which includes a new dance-style sampled drum track and a new arrangement of the background vocals. Fun and upbeat, but only available to radio stations.

Various Artists, Carnival! (RCA Victor #74321 44769-2) - "I Bought Me a Cat" (lead vocal). Recorded live with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra during James' 1995 symphonic tour, this song was the "comic relief" of the concert, a traditional American children's tune arranged by Aaron Copland. It's great fun, as is the rest of the CD, which also features new songs by Sting, Paul Simon, Shawn Colvin, and many others. Sales of this disc benefit the Rainforest Foundation.

Various Artists, E-Town Live (Private Label, out of print) - "Copperline" (guitar, lead vocal). JT performed this tune live with a full band on a 1997 appearance on this Boulder, Colorado FM show. It's a good performance, but not as good as on JT's own Live album (he even flubs a line!). Still, it's nice to have, and the CD has great performances by 14 other artists too.

Various Artists, Rare On Air, Vol. 3 (Mammoth #MR0162-2) - "Secret O' Life" (guitar, lead vocal). Recorded live in the studio at KCRW in June 1994 for the program "Morning Becomes Eclectic". It's a lovely, simple version of one of JT's greatest songs. It also features the late, great Don Grolnick on piano.

1998

James Taylor, "Jump Up Behind Me (Radio Mix)" (Columbia Promo CD #CSK 41076, out of print) - A different mix than the album version, including slightly different background vocals, an enhanced drum track and a more prominent mix of Sting's background vocals at the end. Very nice, but available only to radio stations.

Sally Taylor, Tomboy Bride (Blue Elbow #79020 4-90092-2) - "Unsung Dance" (guitar). Daughter Sally recorded the final, unlisted track of her CD "in Dad's living room". It's a lovely, quiet ballad with James on guitar and Sally on vocals, and a perfect ending to a very impressive debut. This disc can be ordered through the Sally Taylor Website.

1999

Jonathan Elias, The Prayer Cycle (Sony Classical #SK 60569) - "Grace" (lead vocal). In one of his most interesting collaborations to date, James sings along with The English Chamber Orchestra and Chorus and John Williams on guitar in this symphonic prayer. The results are odd and not immediately likable. This CD also features Linda Ronstadt and Alanis Morissette.

Sting, Brand New Day (A&M) - "Fill Her Up" (background vocal). Blecccchhhh. This CD also features Stevie Wonder and Branford Marsalis.

Kate Taylor, Auld Lang Syne (Front Door #CD33) - "Auld Lang Syne (The Days of Long Ago)" (guitar, harmony vocal). James and Sister Kate harmonize beautifully on James' marvelous new arrangement of this timeless song, with updated lyrics. This is the one and only track on this limited edition CD single, available only at Kate Taylor's website.

Various Artists, Aida (Rocket #314-524 628-2) - "How I Know You" (guitar, lead vocal). On a collection of songs written by Elton John and Tim Rice, James performs this wonderful song that would fit right in on Hourglass. This CD also features over a dozen other stars, from Sting and Elton John to Boyz II Men and the fabulous Spice Girls.

Various Artists, Live In Concert (Som Livre #1053 2) - "Only a Dream in Rio" (guitar, lead vocal). This Brazilian release features James' performance from New York's Beacon Theatre in 1998. This CD also features 12 other performers, including Carole King, Phil Collins and George Benson.

Various Artists, SNL 25: Saturday Night Live, The Musical Performances Vol. 1 (DreamWorks #0044-50205-2) - "Secret O' Life" (guitar, lead vocal). 2000

Mark Knopfler, Sailing To Philadelphia (Warner Bros.) - "Sailing To Philadelphia" (duet vocal, guitar). Not only is this beautiful duet a must-have, but this marvelous album doesn't have a weak track on it. This album also features performances by Van Morrison, Gillian Welch, and Squeeze's Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook.

Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, & Mark O'Connor, Appalachian Journey (Sony Classics #66782) - "Hard Times Come Again No More" (guitar, lead vocal), "Benjamin" (guitar, whistling). JT shines on this beautiful studio recording of "Hard Times," a wonderful Stephen Foster tune, which he also performed during his 1999 symphonic tour. "Benjamin" is a lovely instrumental James wrote for his son, previously recorded by David Sanborn.

Maceo Parker, Dial M-A-C-E-O (W.A.R? #44626) - "My Baby Loves You" (background vocal). Although James plays a small role in the background of this tune, and only appears at the end, it's the funkiest song on which he's ever appeared. The CD itself is a lot of fun, and also features guest appearances by Ani DiFranco and Prince.

James Taylor, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2: A Radio Special (Columbia Promo 2-CD set, out of print) - This rare 2-CD radio special was made and released as a promo only in Canada. It includes interviews with James and a musical retrospective of his long, successful career.

Michael Brecker, Nearness of You: The Ballad Book (Verve #314-549-705-2) - "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" (lead vocal), "The Nearness of You" (lead vocal). JT's latest recording of "...Lonely Tonight" is very different and truly wonderful, like a laid back session in great jazz club after closing time. His cover of Hoagy Carmichael's "Nearness of You" is also a perfect gem. This must-have jazz album also features Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Hayden and Jack DeJohnette.

Shawn Colvin, Whole New You (Columbia #CK 85448) - "Bonefields" (harmony vocal). JT adds a fantastic harmony vocal onto the chorus of this, one of the best tracks on this fantastic album.

Ben Taylor, Famous Among the Barns (Iris Records #97220). James contributed harmony vocals to three songs on son Ben's independent release. Although JT is barely audible, this is a great album and will be sure to please any JT fan.

Kate Taylor, Beautiful Road (Front Door Records #FDR CD333) - "I Will Fly" (second vocal), "Auld Lang Syne (The Days of Long Ago)" (guitar, harmony vocal). Sister Kate's first album in over 20 years is a welcome return, with James adding a great call-and-answer vocal on "I Will Fly" plus beautiful harmonies on James' 1999 arrangement of "Auld Lang Syne" (previously released as a CD single). This album also features Mavis Staples (The Staples Singers) and Levon Helm (The Band).
