It's been a quiet year as James completes work on his new studio album, his first new album of original material since 2002's October Road, due for release in 2014. Meanwhile, as if there aren't enough JT greatest hits collections on the market, here comes the new 2-CD collection The Essential James Taylor. It's a very good two disc career retrospective, covering everything from 1970's Sweet Baby James to 2007's One Man Band (omitting any tracks from JT's 1969 Apple Records debut). Also, check out the mp3 of the month page for this month's rare JT track, a quiet little acoustic rendition of "London Town"!
10.8.12
James Taylor At Christmas is being re-released on October 30th with two added tracks: "Here Comes the Sun" with Yo-Yo Ma (previously released on Songs of Joy & Peace) and "Mon Beau Sapin," a French rendition of "O Christmas Tree." Also, a new "import" CD titled Feel the Moonshine, featuring a JT concert from 1976 which was broadcast live in FM stereo from Pittsburgh, PA is now available at Amazon. And finally, JT discusses politics and his next (and possibly last?) album in this excellent Rolling Stone interview. Fans of JT's son Ben Taylor should not miss out on his excellent new CD, Listening!

Lots of updates! June 12 will see the release of the first new studio recording from JT in quite a while! The duet "Soul Companion" will appear on Mary Chapin Carpenter's upcoming album Ashes and Roses. JT's excellent live 1986 concert "Live in Germany" (previously a laserdisc-only release) has now been released on DVD (region free NTSC) and on CD (13 tracks, 50 minutes). It's a surprisingly good recording and performance, and includes a rare live performance of "Sea Cruise!" JT's son Ben Taylor's new album "Listening" is set for release in August 2012. Hear the track "Worlds Are Made of Paper" at Spinner.com, and check out another new live performance in this YouTube video. Until then, you can download an exclusive live Ben Taylor EP here.

What a great month for JT remasters! Audio guru Steve Hoffman has remastered JT's 1972 classic (and perhaps my favorite JT album) One Man Dog for release on 24k Gold Disc on the Audio Fidelity label November 30! If you're familiar with Hoffman, you'll know this promises to be the best sounding release of this album since the original vinyl pressing. Other new 24k Gold CDs of interest include Randy Newman's 12 Songs, Simon & Garfunkel's Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme and Sounds of Silence, Stevie Wonder's Talking Book and Music of My Mind, and Billy Joel's Glass Houses and 52nd Street.

A whopping 650 minutes includes JT's episode, with fascinating interviews about JT's musical influences and songwriting style, plus exclusive performances of Why Baby Why, Fire and Rain, That Lonesome Road, Sweet Baby James and Crying in the Rain (duet with Elvis Costello). Costello and Laura Cantrell also perform a great cover of Bartender's Blues. For JT fans in France, Francis Cabrel's new live DVD La Tournee des Roses et des Orties features a new duet with JT of "Millworker," performed in January 2009. And let's not forget there are new CD's now available by JT's siblings Kate Taylor (Fair Time) and Livingston Taylor (Last Alaska Moon)!
1.10.10

The truly excellent 2-CD set "Amchitka: The Concert That Launched Greenpeace," featuring JT along with Joni Mitchell and Phil Ochs is now shipping from the Greenpeace Canada website. This is a beautiful recording of an excellent, previously unreleased October 16, 1970 concert which was a fundraiser to protest U.S. nuclear bomb tests near Amchitka, Alaska. The second half of disc one features James performing songs from "Sweet Baby James" solo on acoustic guitar, as well as an early performance of the just-written "Riding On a Railroad." He joins Joni on disc two for a couple of tunes, including a very rare performance of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man." This is a definite must-have for JT collectors! All proceeds benefit the Greenpeace organization. See the Rarities page for detailed info.
9.3.09
JT has released an exclusive new live version of "Carolina In My Mind" on the Funny People soundtrack, which also includes a previously unreleased John Lennon demo and an alternate version of a great Neil Diamond song. 7.1.09
Here's an interesting quote from this month's Rolling Stone article about Michael Lang, the organizer of 1969's Woodstock Festival: "In his Woodstock, New York office, Lang found a letter from the Beatles' label, Apple Corps, informing him that John Lennon couldn't make the fest due to the 1968 drug bust that prevented him from coming to America. Instead, James Taylor was offered. 'We were in panic mode, so I never saw it until it was too late,' says Lang." What an opportunity missed -- JT could have played Woodstock!
6.10.09

Just click the free Subscribe button to see the newly added videos every time you return to YouTube! Enjoy!

Here's an interesting "new" JT rarity: The 1986 Graham Nash duet "Sad Eyes" has been entirely remixed for Nash's box set Reflections, removing the synthesizers and making JT's harmony more prominent. The excellent box set is definitely worth checking out, but if you just want that song you can buy the solo mp3 from Amazon, where hundreds of JT's songs are available as high quality 256k mp3's, with no digital rights management (you can copy and play them on any device). New JT DVD releases include the 1982 anti-nuclear concert documentary In Our Hands and a 2002 appearance on The Charlie Rose Show. Also, the release date for Other Covers, a specially priced seven-song CD featuring leftover songs from the Covers sessions, has been set for April 7! Plus, for Vinyl LP fanatics, there's the well-reviewed vinyl release of Covers too!
10.14.08

Happy Holidays! Be sure to grab JT's brand new CD/DVD release One Man Band, which is truly excellent. Accompanied by Larry Goldings on piano, JT performs stripped down versions of many of his favorite songs, including several surprises. It's a perfect live recording, and the DVD is shot beautifully. (Plus, there's a selection of deleted bits, including JT's imitation of Bob Dylan, which is fun.) All in all, an excellent package and not to be missed by any JT fan! (The label, Hear Music, also just released the first new Joni Mitchell CD in years!)
9.18.07
JT's 1971 performance of "Sweet Baby James" on the "Johnny Cash Show" is included on a new 2-DVD collection of musical performances called The Johnny Cash TV Show: 1969-1971, which also includes rare performances by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt and many others. See updated tour dates here. And JT's beautiful duet with Alison Krauss, "How's the World Treating You," is included on her excellent best-of compilation, A 100 Miles or More: A Collection.
6.1.07
Have you ever listened to "Sweet Baby James " or "Mud Slide Slim" on CD and thought they didn't sound very good? I know I have; they're muddy and hissy to my ears. For those of you who agree, you're in luck -- if you like vinyl. Warner Bros. records has announced a new online store called Because Sound Matters, and JT's first two WB albums are slated for release on 180 gram virgin vinyl, "painstakingly mastered by Steve Hoffman in true analog from the original Warner Bros./Reprise stereo master mixes." Hoffman is well-known for producing the greatest sounding masters of classic recordings, and is a strong critic of the Loudness Wars, a current problem with new music and many poorly remastered CDs. (Click this link to see a 2-minute video clearly explaining the sad shame of Loudness Wars.) No date has been set yet for the vinyl releases (and so far no CD remasters are planned), but you can expect the high quality LP's to have a $24.98 retail price tag. For now, enjoy an extremely rare duet with Paul McCartney on the mp3 of the month page, and don't miss JT performing a Paul Simon song on "Gershwin Prize for Popular Song" June 27th on PBS television. You'll find info about this and upcoming tour dates here.
3.5.07
JT's cover version of "River" will appear on the new various artists CD A Tribute to Joni Mitchell, along with recordings by Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang, Prince, Sufjan Stevens and others. It is available now at Amazon.

JT treats online: You'll find several performances from a recent rehearsal session on two different websites: Rehearsals.com and AOL Music, which also features streaming audio of the entire Christmas album. Also, the iTunes store has four exclusive live JT performances (for 99¢ each) on "The Bridge Collection," taken from Neil Young's annual benefit concerts. Finally, if you're in the New York area, check out the tour page for info on two early '07 special appearances!

You'll find updated tour dates and TV appearances (including NBC's "Today" show on December 1!) on the tour page. And off-topic: It's always an event when a new Beatles CD is released! The new "mash-up" CD, The Beatles: Love, is no exception! Created for the Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas by the Beatles' original producer George Martin (and his son), the new CD is "a fascinating reworking of numerous classic Beatles recordings" including rare demos and alternate unreleased tracks, combining elements from many different Beatles songs to create entirely new works. It is a fun, fascinating listen and a must for any Beatles fan! It is available at Amazon.com now, and you can also hear four tracks at the The Beatles' official website.
10.4.06

10.15.05
The release date of the new Hurricane Katrina Benefit CD has just been set for November 22. James sings a heartfelt solo acoustic version of "Never Die Young," and the disc also includes Norah Jones, Paul Simon and many others! You can audio stream the entire concert online at the NPR website. Also, Erik in Germany just informed me that James sings backup vocals on last year's excellent Crosby-Nash album! Details on both of these releases can be found on the Rarities page.
